Flavonoids May Decrease the Risk of Cancer & Heart Disease

Participants consuming about 500 mg of total flavonoids a day had the lowest risk of cancer or heart disease death.

According to research from Edith Cowan University (EDCU) published in Nature Communications consuming flavonoid-rich products like apples and tea may protect against cancer and heart disease, especially for smokers and heavy drinkers. The study which lasted 23 years studied 53,048 Danes.

The study subject who habitually consumed moderate to high amounts of foods rich in flavonoids were less likely to die from cancer or heart disease.

It’s important to note that flavonoid consumption does not counteract all of the increased risk of death caused by smoking and high alcohol consumption.

A variety of fruit is a smarter move than sticking with multiple daily servings of one thing a day.

Examples of flavonoids a day that you can consume are:

One cup of tea

One apple

One orange

100 grams of blueberries

100 grams of broccoli

“Flavonoids have been shown to be anti-inflammatory and improve blood vessel function, which may explain why they are associated with a lower risk of death from heart disease and cancer.”
