Are Plastic Straws Recyclable?

Are Plastic Straws Recyclable?

[How to Properly Recycle & Dispose Plastic Straws]

Read below for a tip on how to recycle your plastic straws

https://get-green-now.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/plastic-drinking-straws-compressed.jpg

Why are Plastic Straws bad anyway?

Plastic straws become a big problem after they are thrown out. The world uses a lot of plastic straws, and many of these end up in landfills or polluting the environment.

Last year, Americans bought an estimated 390 million plastic straws each day. That amounts to about 142 billion straws per year!

To make matters worse, plastic straws do not biodegrade. Instead, they continue to degrade (break down) into smaller and smaller pieces. These tiny fragments of plastic are known as microplastics

Microplastics can be harmful to marine life, and they stay in our oceans and ecosystems forever.

Why can’t Plastic Straws be Recycled?

Plastic straws are made out of type 5 plastic, also known as polypropylene.

Although polypropylene can be recycled, most recycling facilities do not accept plastic straws. Straws are small and flexible, and can fall between the cracks of machinery, or get stuck in machinery. Therefore, they usually do not get recycled.

There is a special trick that you can use to get them recycled, as you’ll see below.

How to Properly Recycle Plastic Straws (Easily)

If your city does not have the ability to recycle plastic straws, then you can use this trick to get them recycled properly.

Here are the details:

Instead of directly placing plastic straws in the recycling bin, put them first into a larger container that is also made out of polypropylene, or type 5 plastic.

This way, the plastic straws stored in the larger polypropylene container won’t get caught in recycling machinery. Therefore, they will get recycled with other pieces of polypropylene.

Some examples of type 5 plastic containers that straws can be placed into include plastic take-out containers, microwavable plastic containers, and margarine tubs or other similar containers.

To check if your container is the proper type, just check for the recycling label. Type 5 plastic (polypropylene) will be marked with a number 5 inside the recycling symbol. The image below illustrates this symbol:

https://get-green-now.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Type-5-plastic-compressor.png

This method isn’t foolproof, however.

Although this method means that plastic straws can be recycled by recycling machinery and recyclers, it doesn’t mean that the plastic will be recycled.

What do I mean by this?

Well you see, there is very little demand for recycled polypropylene, as it is worth very little, and it is very cheap to manufacture.

As a result, not many recyclers will recycle all the type 5 plastic that they receive. It just doesn’t make sense financially. In the end, some of the plastic will end up in landfills, even if it could have been recycled.

The bottom line?

Recycling isn’t the best option if you want to help solve this plastic straw problem. Below, you’ll find two ways of tackling this straws problem that are even better than recycling.

Hint: It will involve simply not using a plastic straw!

Other (Better) ways to Solve the Plastic Straws Problem

1. Drink without a straw

The easiest way to counter this plastic straw problem is to just reduce your usage of plastic straws or stop using them entirely.

Plastic straws are a non-essential item for most people. Think about it… do you really need that plastic straw to drink, or can you just drink directly from the cup?

For most people, it’s a simple change that makes a pretty big difference. Just stop using plastic straws in the first place, and you won’t have the problem of disposing of them!

For example, you can start off by requesting for your drink without a straw at restaurants. Restaurants usually give out straws automatically with your drink, so it’s important that you ask before you order your drink.

This is the simplest way to solve the straw problem. Simply drink from a cup directly, without a plastic straw!

2. Use reusable alternatives to plastic straws

Some people prefer to drink their beverage using a straw. If so, there are many biodegradable or reusable straw options to choose from, instead of using plastic ones.

For example, you can buy reusable glass or stainless-steel straws that can be used over and over again. Most will also come with cleaning brushes when you buy them, so it’s super easy to clean.

While reusable straws are good options for individuals, it would be complicated for restaurants to serve reusable straws. The best solution for restaurants who still want to serve straws is to use biodegradable paper straws.

Properly made paper straws don’t rip or fall apart easily when placed into a liquid. And, they can be bought relatively cheaply, although they are still more expensive than plastic straws.

If restaurants insist on keeping with the tradition of serving straws, then the most environmentally friendly option is to use paper straws instead of plastic ones.

The bottom line?

For most of us, plastic straws are a useless accessory in our lives. For others, their well-being depends on plastic straws. For those of us who can, we should try to limit our use of single-use plastic as much as possible.

FUN INFORMATION

The Evolution of Straw Manufacturing

Believe it or not, straws have been around since 3000 B.C., when Sumerians used them to sip beer from jars. These straws were made of gold, but eventually rye grass was used, and then paper. Paper was the material of choice until the early 1960s, but plastic was found to be a more durable material, especially for new designs like bendy straws.

Today’s straws are made of polypropylene, a resin of plastic known by the number 5 in the resin identification code. Polypropylene itself is a highly recyclable plastic resin, commonly used in yogurt containers, bottle caps, toothbrushes and plastic utensils. But recyclers are usually cautious about the types of polypropylene they accept, and straws will rarely be accepted with other forms of polypropylene.

Plogging

Plogging? What’s that?

Plogging is a combo of plocka upp, which means “pick’ up” in Swedish, and jogging.

It started in Scandinavia and has spread all around the world. It’s as simple as it sounds. You carry a lightweight bag, fill it with rubbish along your jogging (or even walking) routine and fill the bag with rubbish along your route.

The nonprofit Keep America Beautiful is encouraging people to post their efforts on social media with the hashtags #plogging and #DoBeautifulThings.

Benefits: Cleans up the Earth and a half-hour of plogging burns an estimated 288 calories. 50 more than regular jogging.

Vitamin D is U.K’s Top Single Vitamin Supplement

Britain’s favorite single letter vitamin supplement is vitamin D which has risen 7 percentage points in the last year and is now used by 33% of vitamin, mineral, and supplement (VMS). Users are up from 26% in 2017 according to a research firm named Mintel.

While usage has ticked upward for all age groups, 35-54-year-olds are the main drivers, with usage rising from 22% in 201 to 35% in 2018 among this group.

https://amzn.to/2XXcwqP

A Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trail (VITAL) launched in 2010 and followed a healthy, racially diverse group of 25,871 American men, age 50 and older and women age 55 and older for up to six years to see whether more D really is better.

After two years of taking D, participants who developed cancer had a 25% reduced risk of dying from the disease.

600 IU’s PER DAY: This is the baseline dietary amount recommended by the U.S. government’s Institute of Medicine for adults under age 70 (800 IU’s for older adults) for optimal bone health. Too little D can mean softer or brittler bones, increasing your risk of fracture.

Bottom line: Supplement in moderation. If you want to hedge your bets and take 1,000 to 2,000 IU’s per day, that is very reasonable.

Understanding Product Labels

Recently I did an online survey about different Labels such as USDA/Organic, EWG Verified, etc. and I didn’t realize that I really didn’t understand the food labels as much as I thought I had. So, here’s we are talking about Food Labels so we can both understand what they mean next time we see them at the grocery store.

Also be aware that the FDA prohibits only about a dozen ingredients in personal care products, compared with about 1,000 that are forbidden in Europe. (They need to step up their game here in the USA)!

USDA Organic: A very stringent certification must be made with 95% USDA-certified organic agricultural ingredients. (The other 5% have to be from an approved national list).

EWG Verified; Phthalate and Paraben Free

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has approved more than 1,160 products that don’t contain substances like phthalates and parabens. To qualify, companies must disclose all their ingredients and follow good manufacturing practices.

Leaping Bunny: No Animal Cruelty It’s run by a coalition of animal protection organizations. This certification means the product or ingredient was not tested on animals.

Made Safe: Good for You-And the Planet

One of the most comprehensive in the U.S.A. goes beyond what’s printed on the ingredient label: Sub ingredients (as in all the individual parts of each ingredient) are examined for health hazards to humans, animals, aquatic life, and the environment.

Fair Trade Certified: It shows customers that the company uses equitable trade practices at every level of the supply chain, ensuring fair treatment, prices and environmental impact.

Grassfinished beef comes from cattle that ate nothing but grass and forage for their entire lives.

Kosher Certification is the stamp of kosher approval by a rabbinic Agency verifying they have checked the products’ ingredients, production facility, and actual production to ensure all ingredients, derivatives, tools, and machinery have no trace of non-kosher substances. The Kosher Certified symbol assures consumers that both the actual product and its production adhere to all Kosher Law requirements.

Laws of Abundance Part 5 Be On The Right Side Of Interest

There’s a lot of talk about borrowing money vs not borrowing and I’d like to talk about it too.

Credit Cards. Most of us are spending money we don’t have through the use of Credit Cards. It’s perfectly okay to use a credit card to build your credit IF you are paying it off each month in full or if you are under an introductory offer of 0% interest. Just don’t get caught with your pants down when that introductory offer expires and you have a large balance. OUCH!

What we want to do is get on the right side of interest. What do I mean by that? Instead of paying interest, you want to be collecting interest. For example, let’s take Synchrony Bank. The use of their credit card will cost you a whopping 29.99% Annual Interest rate. DOUBLE OUCH if you are on the paying end of that! On the right side of interest with a minimum of $2000, you can get paid 2.75 APY for a 12-Month CD or with no minimum balance a 2.20% APY for their savings account. (Also, see at my Wealth and Riches blog Laugh at 2% Interest Rate and Get 5% instead).

Opt-out of Credit Card Offers: If you are tempted by credit card offers you get in the mail, the best thing to do is to opt-out of the offers. To do so go to www.optoutprescreen.com which is run by the major credit bureaus. Also opting out of prescreened card offers makes it less likely that and ID thieves will intercept them and take out credit in your name. Your opt-out electronically or by phone (888-567-8688) is good for five years or you can mail in a form to block prescreened offers permanently. (You may still receive offers from companies you currently do business with.) If you miss hearing about card deals, you can opt back in.

One of the things to get on the right side of interest is to create an Emergency Fund with the first goal of $1000, the second goal of 3 months of income, the third goal of 6 months of income, and the 4th goal of 1 year worth of income. Why? Because when something goes wrong, you have the cash to pay for it instead of relying on a credit card or loan. And if you have a job and lose it, you won’t sweat it like you would if you didn’t have a year’s worth put aside. Sweet, stress-free living, with an emergency fund.

Taxes: I’d be leaving out a major part of the puzzle if I didn’t talk about taxes that eat up our earning faster than a New York Minute. If you’re self-employed you’ll want to make sure you are paying your quarterly and if you are an employee you want to make sure your withholding amount is enough to cover all your earnings by the end of the tax year. Owing the IRS comes with penalties and interest (once again on the wrong side of interest) and they have the power to attach your paycheck and take up to 1/2 of your checks until the debt is paid unless you first set up a payment plan with them and stay faithful in paying each month of the agreed-upon amount. The IRS can also put a lien on any property you have too, to secure their money owed.

One tax strategy and extra income strategy is to start your own home-based business with the intent to make a profit. This will give you a number of legal tax deductions that you would not have just being an employee. (See your C.P.A. for details).

Tax Breaks for charitable work: You can deduct unreimbursed travel expenses as a charitable donation if you file an itemized tax return and the trip is primarily for your work with the nonprofit. You can deduct airfare, lodging, meals, and if driving, parking, tolls, and mileage at a rate of 14 cents per mile. Keep a mileage log with the date and reason for the trip. You should also get a letter from the charity confirming your activity and stating that no goods or services were exchanged.

Listen, be real with yourself. If you are like most people, you are in credit card debt. If that’s you, then your first financial priority is to get 100% out of bad debt. I say “bad debt” meaning if you’ve used your credit cards for non-income activities then that is “bad debt”.”Good debt” if there really is such a thing would be considered debt towards creating cash flow. My advise if to get out of all debt ASAP. To be 100% debt-free is the start to your financial freedom! Getting on the right side of interest, and being debt-free will create that financial freedom you are seeking.

Laws of Abundance Part 4 Faith

The Bible says: Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1.

You see, to have faith, you have to have vision. A vision within your mind and heart that sees the manifestation before it’s physically before you. That’s what this verse is saying. You have to see it and believe it as if it’s already here. This isn’t about religion. This is about creating a vision, holding it, believing it, and working toward it until you have it.

What were Jesus instructions on how to pray? Do you know? This is key to having faith. If you don’t know how to pray, your prayers may not be answered. And when we pray, you want your prayers answered, right? So how do you pray? How do you pray where your prayers will be answered?

Jesus said, “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” -Mark 11:24 Jesus was teaching us how to have faith. He was teaching us that when we desire something, you are to pray to the Father believing that you will have it! How do you do that? You go back to Hebrews 11:1 You see what you are praying for as if you already have it. The word “hope” here means “to expect, to trust.” Let’s skip to verse 3:
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Do you understand that verse? Everything that you see that was created, the water, the air, the land, the trees, the animals, the insects, everything at first was void, it was not here. It was not here until God by the word spoke it, and it became! While we are not God, we are made in the image of God, and therefore have been created to be like Him in every aspect, including abundance! Think about it. When God made the Earth, did He make a tiny plot of land? Of course not. Did He when He made the trees only make one? No! As a matter of fact, the only single thing God made to start with was Man. Adam by name. Then He made Eve from Adam. Then what was God’s first command? “Go and be fruitful and multiply the face of the earth”. Not just addition, but multiplication! Once again abundance! Why? Because God is a God of abundance. Look around you if you don’t believe me. We can especially see this in our grocery stores in the U.S.A. The other day I was in the store and I saw a whole section of croutons. Those little bread cubes that many of us put on our salad. Well, this section had to have at least thirty different types of croutons. It was mind-boggling. Something so simple and small, yet an abundance of them. Think about Apples. There are 7500 cultivars of apples in the world! I’m glad they aren’t all in the grocery store I go to, I’d never be able to figure out which one I want!

See it, believe it, speak it, and as the prosperity speakers teach “speak it with emotion.” Why emotion? Because when we mix what we believe with emotion, the feeling becomes magnified within us. I wonder what Gods tone was when he said: “Let there be light.” Was it monotone? Was it a tone of boredom? Or perhaps it was a tone of excitement knowing what was to come? How are you when you either make something or are expecting something very good to come soon? Think about it…

Arnold Schwarzenegger was quoted once saying “I’ve only got the things I really wanted. The things I didn’t really want, I didn’t usually get.”

As businessman Ed Mylett says “You were created to do something great.”

Let’s think about this proclamation made by Dr. Dennis Kimbro Teacher and author of Think and Grow Rich a Black Choice: “So if you lived a normal life. What is a normal life? Seventy-four, seventy-seven years on earth. Do the calculus. That only equates to 30,000 days on earth. Time is not running out, but your life is. You’ve been chosen, place your fingerprints on life, and make a difference right now. That’s what it means to be wealthy.” (Quoted from Think and Grow Rich The Legacy Movie).

Don’t lose patience. It’s going to happen. Have faith. It will happen soon enough.

Isaiah 48:17-19

Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go. “If only you had paid attention to My commandments! Then your well-being would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea. “Your descendants would have been like the sand, And your offspring like its grains; Their name would never be cut off or destroyed from My presence.” Isaiah 48:17-19

Align your life up with the Laws that God has put in place to live in true abundance in every area of your life.

Millennial’s Seeking Out Green Beauty Products

One recent survey found that 60% of women and 75% of millennial’s are seeking out green beauty products.

Because women have been demanding better and more natural products, companies are waking up and delivering them.

One such company that has always delivered green natural products has expanded its line to include different cosmetics and personal care products by YL.

Savvy Minerals by YL (Lips stick, Blush, Eye Liner, Eye shadow, and more

Instead of Perfume which can have a negative effect on hormones(Phthalates), many people are using pure essential oils such as Joy or Lavender. Men (including myself) like Valor a lot.

Shampoos:

The scalp can absorb a large amount of what you put on it. Look for formulas free of sulfates that can cause irritation. I also noticed that SLS can be harmful to your body too. Once again, go with natural shampoos. Here’s a list by YL:

Copaiba Vanilla Shampoo

Lavender Mint Daily Shampoo

Lavender Volume Shampoo

KidsScents Shampoo

Baby Wash & Shampoo

And even Fido has his/her own Shampo

Sunscreen

Two major reasons to switch to mineral SPF.

Lab studies show that UV-blocking chemicals like oxybenzone may be hormone distrupters and another study found that oxbenzone when it ends up in the ocean via wastewater or people swimming can damage coral reefs.

Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

Deodorants (Aluminum-free)

AromaGuard Meadow Mist

AromaGuard Mountain Mint

Natural Nail Polish remover (Not from YL)

One study found that the chemicals in lacquers could leach into your body via your nails. Instead use a natural nail polish remover:
