I Can’t Touch My Toes, What Can I Do?

Photo by bruce mars on Unsplash

Everybody that can stand on two feet should be able to touch your toes. I remember there was a time I could not. Because of the type of work I do, I sit for long periods of time (not a healthy thing to do) and so I needed to slowly loosen up.  How did I do it, and how can you too? I’m glad you asked. (Wink).

My understanding is from all the sitting I was doing it meant more than likely my hamstrings and or lower back were tight. In my case, both were very tight. All of these can lead to back pain and even possible disc problems down the line. So I had to loosen up.

I started doing stretches of different types. The last thing you want to do is when you are trying to touch your toes is to bounce. Don’t do that. Just slowly bend over and hang for a while. Then cross your arms over and try to touch your other foot and visa versa. Again, don’t bounce and don’t force yourself down. Just do what is comfortable even if it’s not even close to touching your toes. It’s all right. You’ll get there, I promise.

I then followed this video in Dr. Saran’s video in different stretches. Here it is:

Please consult your Doctor before attempting any of these stretches. See my Disclaimers page for more information.

These stretches really helped me and still do today.  How often you do them is up to you. I’d say every other day listening to how your body feels and then once you feel loose and can touch your toes, you could do it every day.

After a good work out, you may want to start using these essential oils on your body. Click Here

What other stretches have you used to loosen up your back and other parts of your body? Please comment below and let us know. I’d love to read your comments.

I myself like to listen to Bach when I am doing things online.

Some type of research has found that it reduced listeners overall anxiety by up to 65%. There’s a 10-hour version.
Here it is on YouTube if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYnA9wWFHLI

Salad Dressing Calories and Ingredients To Watch Out For

First things first. Let’s first list the ingredients that you DO NOT WANT in your salad dressing:

  • Soy or Canola – These crops are grown using massive amounts of pesticides which can end up in your body.
  • High-fructose corn syrup – Yes, they are putting this stuff in ready-made dressings. (See my blog post on High-fructose for more information if needed)
  • Titanium dioxide. Used to make colors brighter. Also used in paint for the same reason. Lead can be found in this ingredient.  For sure something you don’t want to consume!
  • Red #40- An artificial food dye linked to ADHD in children.
  • Trans fats- (also words like “partially hydrogenated,” “shortening,” or “interesterified.”) The stuff that can cause heart disease when you have too much of it.You want to keep the level down to .5 grams of fat per serving or less of course.
  • Monosodium glutamate, or MSG for short- Many people have reported it causes migraines. Animal studies have shown it to cause nerve cell damage in the brain.

After doing a little research into how many calories are in different salad dressings, all I can say is with my cheeks blown out “FAT ALERT!” Dang!

I myself love ranch. To be specific I love Newmans Own ranch dressing. I like the taste and I like that 100% of the profits go to charity.  BUT, after though looking at the ingredients that list Soybean Oil And/Or Canola Oil), that is a turnoff, and then reading the calorie count it’s 150 calories per serving which it says is 2 tablespoons. Heck I know I sure use more than that! Ahhhhh! Let’s look at some more well-known dressings and see what their calorie count is.

Ranch

  • Hidden Valley 140 calories per 2 tablespoons (First ingredient Soybean or Canola oil).
  • Kraft     110 calories per 2 tablespoons (First ingredient Soybean oil)
  • Ken’s     200 calories per 2 oz packet (First ingredient Soybean oil)
  • Litehouse Homestyle 120 calories per 2 tablespoons. (First ingredient Canola oil)

Let’s mention something here for a moment that I’ve noticed posted on many of these products websites. Comments such as “I’ve been using this since I was a kid.” I understand as I used certain products since I was a kid too because my mom used them. Now that I’m a grown man now, I can see some of the things Mama used to use are not healthy choices for my body. More than likely back then, Mama and others didn’t have many studies done to show the harmful effects of some of these ingredients as we do today, plus it’s my bet that 40 years ago, there were fewer pesticides used than there is today.

So, what do we do, other than making our own dressings? (Not a bad idea and certainly one option). The other option would be is to use simpler products (such as a Balsamic Vinaigrette or buy organic products.

So we have learned that leading brands of at least Ranch dressing are not the healthiest choice we can make. Even brands that give their profits away. It’s better to either make your own, keep your dressing simple, or buy organic.

If you’d like to share more of what you have learned about dressings and perhaps some suggestions on what you use that is healthy, please comment below.

How To Help Your Physical Wellness Even If You Have An Office Job

Photo by Farzad Nazifi on Unsplash

Sitting for long periods of time can promote heart disease.  A 15-year study found that waistlines increased by three-quarters of an inch for each additional hour of sitting beyond five hours a day.  “Dang, no wonder I’m getting so fat” I hear you saying. But what can you do when you have an office job where you are sitting all the time?

Both a reduction in sitting and an increase in walking are important to reduce these things from happening to you.

Standing at your job for just two hours could help according to a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. When office workers stood for two hours, they burned 9% more calories than when just seated.

Set a timer on your desktop or an Outlook reminder to remind yourself to stand up!

Also during your breaks, take a walk. It will help!

How To Stay Healthy And Rarely Get Sick

How To Stay Healthy And Rarely Get Sick

  • Cut down on the red meat. We Americans eat way too much red meat. Beleive me, I love a good steak as much as the next person.(a) Research shows that too much red meat can inflame the lower intestine which is where many immune cells and good gut bacteria live. If the inflammation is prolonged it may attribute to the risk of colon cancer. The next time you’re in the mood for a good steak, cut a very small slice and enjoy! If Prostate health is a concern consider taking Prostate Health.
  • Drink your polyphenols. Red wine, Ningxia Red is great sources of polyphenols. For men, one to two glasses a day of red wine. For women, one glass of red wine. With Ningxia Red, two ounces a day.
  • Work at home or a single office when possible instead of the office with an open floor plan. In a 2011 Danish survey of 2,400 workers, people in an open floor work environment took 62% more sick days than those in individual offices or at home.
  • Consider a smoothie in the morning. Here’s a recipe for one suggestion: Greek Yogurt (read Is Yogurt Healthy For You?), peanut butter, strawberries, spinach, and a banana. A smoothie like this is high in antioxidants.
  • Exercise 5 days a week for 30 to 45 minutes. (b)Adults that work out at least five days a week take 40 to 50 percent fewer sick days than once a week (or less) exercises. Optimize your workout recovery by drinking AminoWise™ during or after a workout
  • Don’t overdo it with Exercise.(b) Too much exercise can have the opposite effect. Too much stress on your body can weaken your immune system.
  • Don’t overuse antibiotics.  When you do get sick, it causes your body to build immunity. Use Probiotics regularly. Life 9 is an excellent choice for Probiotics.
  • Take Super C Vitamin. It’s a combination of pure Orange essential oil with a proprietary blend of camu camu, acerola, cherry, and rose hips fruit powder to create a powerful immune-supporting supplement. Together, these premium ingredients deliver desirable polyphenols, carotenoids, and optimal amounts of vitamin C in a chewable tablet. If you do get a cold take it three times a day instead of once.
  • Astragalus: This herb boosts bone marrow’s ability to produce white blood cells. Try taking 500 to 1,000 milligrams twice a day. Brands to try: Nature’s Way, Now, and Vital Nutrients.
  • Elderberry: It can help with a cold, but better for helping you to fight the flu. One study found that elderberry liquid extract inhibits influenza A and B viruses. Try a tablespoon a day. Brands: Nature’s Way Original Sambucus Elderberry Extract. (It’s sweet tasting so it won’t gag you).
