The Coming Crisis In Antibiotics

I just watched a very informative video on TED. It was of Ramanan Laxminarayan talking about the coming crisis in antibiotics.

He suggested that because of the over use of antibiotics they have become less and less effective. One of the problems is that live stock owners use antibiotics to grow their livestock faster. This of course passes along to us humans as we eat it. So even though the livestock was not sick, they were administered antibiotics as a more profitable way to raise their animals.

He also mentioned that during the flu season, the use of antibiotics rise sharply.

He had a few suggestions of a possible solution, of which I will talk about here of the ones I feel would work most effectively.

1. Make it illegal for the use of antibiotics in animals unless they are sick.

2. Use less antibiotics by prevention. This is the one that interested me the most. He mentioned in place of antibiotics, is probiotics.

Just what is a probiotic? Let’s get the answer from a person that was a GI nurse for many years.

“A probiotic is a natural supplement that is starting to be prescribed by doctors. It is a blend of cultures that are normally present in a healthy gastrointestinal tract. Long term intestinal illness or long term use of antibiotics can strip your guts of their natural flora (bacteria and cultures) that help to hold the BAD bacteria at bay and prevent GI infections. Probiotics are those friendly flora. They help to restore a natural balance in the GI tract. In addition to illness and antibiotics, other things such as colonics can strip the body of these natural components. Probiotics are great and have little or no side effects. They are natural and I highly recommend them. I worked as a GI Nurse Practitioner for a number of years.”

Young Living Essential Oils offers Probiotics called Life 5. A gel capsule that is easy to swallow.

Besides for probiotics what can we do to help either avoid the flu or help it’s effects be minimum?

Diffusing: (Using a cold diffuser).

When diffused, essential oils have been reported to support a already healthy immune system.

Research shows that diffusion of certain oils may reduce bacteria, fungus, and mold, such as Purification essential oil.

Ingredients in Purification Essential Oil:

More about Thieves Essential oilThieves bottle

Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend was created based on the historical tale of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the black plague with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing victims of the killer disease. When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. In modern days, these same herbs and essential oils have been found to be an effective barrier against topical and airborne microorganisms. Young Living’s proprietary Thieves oil blend includes clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and Eucalyptus radiata and has been specially blended to offer the same kind of defense as it did in the fifteenth century. Thieves has been university tested and found to be highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health.*

During the 14th century, the plague spread across Europe. It was estimated to have killed a third of Europe’s population while spreading to Asia and the Middle East. It was also known as the “Black Death” because one of the symptoms, accrual necrosis, caused skin to blacken from sub-dermal hemorrhages. So terrorizing was the disease that it killed within a week, usually 3-4 days, wiping out entire families. “The pestilence was so contagious that those who touched the dead or the sick were immediately affected themselves and died”.

During this time, there was a group of four thieves who were able to not only go near the dying and dead, but were able to touch them. The thieves robbed the bodies of the inflicted and did not become ill, themselves. They were caught in 1413 in Marseilles, France. When they were tried, the magistrate offered leniency if they exposed their secret to resisting the infection. The thieves disclosed a concoction of aromatic herbs, including cloves and rosemary, that they rubbed on their hands, ears, and temples in order to avoid contracting the plague.

This recipe was recreated in Young Living’s blend, Thieves®, which contains the oils of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary. It is highly antimicrobial. When tested at Weber State University, it was found to have a 99.96% kill rate against airborne bacteria. It also carries a frequency of 150 Mhz.

Let’s be proactive in helping ourselves, our family, friends and those around us all over the world by using probiotics and essential oils.
